Here it is 9 p.m. on Sunday night and I figure I’d better give you a glimpse of what we did at camp before I get busy with my daily routine of catching up on things tomorrow, or just plain forget just what all we did at camp. The mind is a terrible thing to waste and sometimes I seem to be very “wasteful”.
We arrived at camp last Sunday afternoon after picking up Ryan as we passed through Louisville. Once we arrived at Spring Mill Bible Camp…located outside of Mitchell, IN…we first helped Ryan get his stuff into his cabin, then we headed to the cooks rooms over the cafeteria to fluff up our nest for the week…our rooms are air conditioned for which we are eternally grateful. When I came back down stairs I receive word that Frances and Lovell were not going to be staying due to a medical emergency concerning Doug, their son-in-law. I immediately begin getting things started for our evening meal which would be served to 120 people in just three hours. Carla and Bob didn’t show up until around 3:30 p.m. and we were to eat at 5:30 p.m. so we were really being pushed. Thankfully, some non-scheduled people pitched in and helped bake cookies along with get the hamburgers on the grill to be cooked by George and Bob. They, also, helped clean lettuce, slice tomatoes and onions, and make up cheese and pickle trays. This was probably our easiest meal all week so it really wasn’t a big deal.
Sleep didn’t seem to come easy for me until Friday night…camp bunk bed so need I say more. I was up by 5:30 a.m. on Monday morning…breakfast wasn’t until 8 a.m. We were up every morning by 6 a.m. so I wasn’t up too early. All of the cooks enjoyed some quiet time with God each morning before we began cooking no later than 7 a.m. I think we had bacon and pancakes Monday along with fruit and juice. I’ve already forgotten what all we did eat during the week but I do remember I made lasagna for them once and that’s always a big hit. We had chicken tenders one meal, sub sandwiches on homemade buns one meal, turkey or ham once, some sort of beef and noodle casserole, pizza was our last meal, We had three big and complete meals each day…meat, two vegetables, salad, fruit, and dessert. The lady that manages the kitchen loves to make the bread stuff so we had homemade biscuits for breakfast once with sausage gravy, homemade sweet rolls, strawberry shortcake with fresh strawberries, and we literally made dozens of cookies each day. We had very little left and no one went away hungry as far as we know. If they did, they have no one to blame but themselves.
France and Lovell did finally get to come back on Wednesday night…Doug had a heart attack and had to have a stint put into his main artery that was 90% blocked.  I was really glad they were able to make it back because they are really special friends and we go back a long way. Frances and I taught a ladies class together for over 12 years so we’ve spent a lot of time sharing and caring.
I managed to smash both thumb nails in the same drawer on two different days, so I have two bruised nails…looks really pretty, black nail beds. I’m a slow learner, I guess, because the first smash was very painful while the second smash was just a little bit painful…most embarrassing to do the same dumb thing twice! Guess that’s enough about what we did even though much more goes on throughout the week. I do know that while we’re preparing one meal, we’re getting started on the next one. Since we’ve done this for about five years we have it down pat and do get some down time during the middle of the afternoon on most days. We feel blessed to have this time to serve, worship, counsel, and pray with so many young people. God has truly blessed me through this opportunity of being “one of the cooks”.
Now to just get rested and finally get everything washed, ironed, and put away. Our house needs a good cleaning, so that’s on my agenda for this week but not sure of what else will take place. I’m sure something will since I seem to stay busy most days.
By the way, for those that saw the birdhouse…on George’s blog…made by Madi while she was here, it now has become occupied by some sort of bird. I’m afraid to look in for fear it will fly out just as I peek in. It has to be some sort of small bird because the opening isn’t very large. The old saying is true…”build them and they will come”.Â
Enjoy the week.
Blessings……….
